Staff Spotlight:
Tamar Williams
Since joining Hawthorne Foundation on December 5, 2016, as a Direct Support Professional (DSP), Tamar has demonstrated unwavering dedication and remarkable growth. Within just a month, she was entrusted with leading her group, and three months later, she advanced to the role of Intern Specialist, even before completing her degree. In 2022, Tamar earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Mercy University. After submitting the necessary documentation to Human Resources, she was officially promoted to Day Hab Specialist.
In 2019, Tamar was offered the position of Assistant Manager but chose to decline, prioritizing her education. When the opportunity returned in May 2025, she accepted with confidence, bringing years of experience and a strong desire to apply her academic knowledge. She has since built meaningful relationships with both parents and, most especially, the students.
Before joining Hawthorne, Tamar had experience working with adults and teenagers with Autism and mental health needs. Her journey at Hawthorne has not been without challenges, but her commitment has never faltered. Motivated by compassion and a deep sense of purpose, she has served individuals across BDH, Dalewood, Audubon, Lafayette, and Ossining with tireless dedication. Known for her flexibility and willingness to help wherever needed, Tamar considers the clients she supports to be like a second family.
Q&A
What inspired you to pursue a career in this field?
While working with a young adult with Autism at a previous job, I witnessed the impact I could make. Helping her reach goals she thought were impossible taught me patience and gave me the confidence to believe I could do more. Later, at Hawthorne, I met a student named Gene Warren, who challenged me in many ways, but I never gave up on him. He inspired me to pursue my degree in Psychology because I wanted to understand him and others like him better. I wanted to “be him”—to put myself in his shoes so I could be more effective in helping him.
Can you share a memorable project or achievement you’re proud of?
Earning my degree in Psychology is something I’m incredibly proud of. I'm currently studying to become a Registered Nurse with a focus on mental health, and my long-term goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner in that field. I have a deep passion for helping others, and this path allows me to do that on a greater scale.
Hardest Part about your job?
I don’t consider anything “hard.” Things only become difficult when you stop trying or give up.
What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work?
I love cooking, and I especially enjoy teaching my three boys how to cook. My youngest son, who’s 11, already knows how to bake! I enjoy exploring new restaurants, listening to music as a form of self-care, and going on road trips. I’m very family-oriented and love spending quality time with my loved ones—especially over good food.
What does a typical day look like for you?
When I worked as a Specialist at Day Habilitation, I made it a point to create an engaging, fun, and structured environment. I developed weekly schedules that included activities, trips, and goal-oriented tasks. During the holidays, I planned special outings to Jones Beach, Calf Pasture Beach, museums, Medieval Times, Rockefeller Center, ferry rides to Staten Island, and more.
Now, as the Assistant Manager at Dalewood, my responsibilities have shifted. I oversee the clinical and medical aspects for all residents, ensuring documentation is submitted on time and that each client's overall well-being is prioritized. I assist the House Manager with required responsibilities, and although I have a leadership role, I remain hands-on, supporting staff and working directly with residents.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Making the program participants and residents happy. I love what I do and helping others brings me joy.
Do you have a personal mantra or philosophy that you live by?
I live by principles and morals. As I’ve grown older, I’ve realized how much time I once wasted not doing what I truly loved. Now, I dedicate myself to helping anyone in need.
What's a fun fact about you that most people wouldn't know?
I’m actually shy! People assume I’m very outgoing because I’m outspoken, but I get nervous in large crowds.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
I wish I could bring back my mother. She would be so proud of me today, she was my role model.
